MENOMONIE – After posting a 4-0 shutout of the Blue Devils last weekend, it was UW-Stout who used a second period offensive explosion to hand the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team a 5-1 loss in the opening game of the 2010 NCHA Peters Cup Friday evening.

The teams will take to the ice again Saturday evening at the Dunn County Ice Arena in the decisive second game of the two game series. If necessary, the teams will immediately play a mini game to determine the winner following Saturday's game.

After jumping out to a 1-0 lead just 5:02 into the first period, Stout's Joe Gaulrapp, the 2010 NCHA Player of the Year, put the Blue Devils up 2-0 just 42 seconds into the second frame.

Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) scored midway through the second, cutting the deficit in half, but Stout's Mike Hartviksen pushed the lead back to two goals with 3:58 remaining in the second.

In the third, Stout's Andy Sternberg scored twice including an empty net goal as the Blue Devils pushed the score to the final of 5-1.

Stout out-shot the Pointers 38-28 on the night. Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) tallied 34 saves in net.

Game time Saturday evening is set for 7:30 p.m.
