RIVER FALLS – UW-Stevens Point's
Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) tallied her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds as the eighth-ranked Pointers women's basketball team snapped UW-River Falls's five game winning streak with a 75-67 victory over the Falcons Saturday afternoon.
The Pointers jumped out to an early six point lead, 13-7, and held an advantage until the Falcons took a one point lead, 21-20 at the 8:53 mark.
UWSP quickly answered with a fastbreak layup by
Andrea Flease (New London/New London) to retake the lead. The Pointers built back up their lead by as many as seven points and took a five point edge, 37-32, into the halftime break.
In the second half the Pointers continued their impressive shooting performance, hitting 13 of their 25 shots (.520), building and holding a double digit lead for much of the second half as the Pointers rolled to the eight point victory.
Petersen finished 6-for-10 from the floor including 2-2 from beyond the three-point arc and a perfect 2-2 from the free-throw line. Three other Pointers finished scoring in double figures as
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) added 11 in the victory and
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) and
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) each added 10.
Brittany Gregorich of River Falls led all scorers with 18 points, eight of which came from the free-throw line.
UW-Stevens Point (6-1, 2-0 WIAC) returns to action Wednesday when they head to Whitewater to face the Warhawks in a 7 p.m. match-up.
