Pointers Wear Out Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. – Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) had a team-high 20 points to lead the ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to an 85-61 victory over the 18th ranked Loggers of the University of Puget Sound on Thursday afternoon at the Memorial Fieldhouse. 

A back-and-forth battle the first 10 minutes of the opening half, the Pointers opened up a seven point advantage, 28-21, thanks to an eight point run. Puget Sound cut the deficit to one with four minutes left in the half but another run by the Pointers pushed the UWSP advantage to eight at the halftime break. 

In the second half the Loggers cut the deficit to two early, but UW-Stevens Point responded with another run to open up a double digit lead and never looked back, pushing their lead to as many as 27 late before closing out the game with the 24-point victory.

Petersen tied for the team lead with four rebounds, adding to her team-high 20 points. She also chipped in three assists in 32 minutes. Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin, WI/West) chipped in 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting, Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) added 15 off the bench and Andrea Flease (New London/New London) chipped in 14. 

UPS's Jocelyn Riordan led all scorers with 21. 

UW-Stevens Point (10-2) will not return home and dive in to the conference portion of their schedule with a showdown Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. against UW-Oshkosh in Stevens Point.
