Pointers Drop Opener in New York

Box Score

OSWEGO, N.Y. – UW-Stevens Point held a 2-1 edge after the first period but the Hobart College responded with five goals to help sink the Pointer men's hockey team 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Campus Center Arena for the opening round of the 2010 PathFinder Bank/Oswego Hockey Classic.

The Pointers took the early lead, as Nick Polaski found the goal just 14 seconds into the game. After a Hobart power play goal knotted the score at 1-1, Jake Skjodt (Carmel, IN/Cathedral) broke the tie with a power play goal of his own, his third of the year, at the 16:33 mark to give the Pointers a 2-1 edge.

Hobart responded with three straight goals in a dominating second period to retake and push their lead to two, 4-2 after two periods of play.

Donnie Hallmark (Ontario, CA/Ontario Christian) scored his first of the season 48 seconds into the third period to cut the UWSP deficit to one, 4-3.

A shorthanded goal at the 16:19 mark pushed the Hobart lead back to two and an empty netter in the final minutes sealed the win for the Statesmen, 6-3.

Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) suffered the loss for the Pointers (5-9), stopping 32 Hobart shots including 17 in the first period. His counterpart, Nick Boradwater, stopped 24 of the Pointers 27 shots on net.

UW-Stevens Point will face tournament host Oswego on Friday at the Campus Center Arena in the consolation game of the PathFinder Bank/Oswego Hockey Classic. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.
