PARKLAND, Wash. – The 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team improved to 9-2 on the year with a 74-53 non-conference victory over Pacific Lutheran University at Olson Auditorium Wednesday evening.
The Pointers shot 51 percent from the field and 11 of 13 players who saw action scored. All-American candidate Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) led the way with a game-high 14 points including 10 straight late in the game's opening half to help the visiting Pointers pull away.
UWSP scored the game's first 11 points before the Lutes finally got on the board with a lay-up by Mandy Wall 4:30 into the game. The Pointers led by as many as 13 in the first half before Pacific Lutheran connected on six straight baskets, cutting a 10 point deficit into a four point one, 24-20, but UW-Stevens Point regained the momentum and took a 34-24 edge into halftime.
In the second half, the Lutes got as close as eight but the Pointers quickly pushed the lead back to double digits and stayed in control the rest of the day, cruising to the 21-point victory.
Petersen shot 6-for-8 from the floor on her way to a team-high 14 points. Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion), Christin Coles (Hustisford/Hustisford) and Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) each added nine points in the victory. Josi Schultz (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) finished with a team-high six rebounds.
Melissa Pixler led a trio of Lutes scoring in double figures, matching Petersen's total of 14.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action Thursday when they travel to Tacoma, Washington for a match-up with the University of Puget Sound.
