EAU CLAIRE – Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) scored the equalizer in the second period and Brandon Busse (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) scored the long-awaited game-winner as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team snapped a seven game skid with a 3-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire at Hobbs Ice Center Saturday evening.
The Pointers fell behind early to the Blugolds as Andrew Wilcox tallied a first period goal and Travis Peckskamp added another midway through the second period, giving Eau Claire the 2-0 advantage.
Max Bobrow (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) started the scoring for the Pointers at the 14 minute mark of the second period, his fourth of the season, and Meo scored the equalizer just four minutes later, knotting the score at two goals apiece after two periods.
In the third, scored his second goal of the season at the 5:43 mark, unassisted, putting the Pointers in front 3-2. The rest of the way UWSP hung on, holding off several late charges by the Blugolds including two power-play opportunities.
Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) tallied 27saves on the night to earn his fifth victory of the season.
The two point Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win gives the Pointers six points on the season, two ahead of UW-River Falls and St. Scholastica and moves the team into fifth place in the league standings.
UW-Stevens Point (5-8, 3-7 NCHA) will now break for finals and the holiday and returns to action on December 30 in Oswego, N.Y. The Pointers will face Hobart College and either Oswego or Hamilton on the 31st.
