STEVENS POINT- Kirsti Nickels (Appleton/East) scored with 24 minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the second half as the Pointers defeated UW-Whitewater by a score of 1-0 to win their third straight WIAC Championship Saturday at the Point Soccer Bowl.
Nickels scored off assists from Andrea Peiffer (Mequon/Homestead) and Kelly Lloyd (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) to give the Pointers the lead, and the one goal proved to be the difference for the Pointers.
Liz Hunter (Stevens Point/SPASH) continued her impressive season as she recorded her 13th shutout in 18 starts. Hunter finished the game with four saves.
The Pointers outshot the Warhawks by a total of 21 to eight and five of the Pointers shots were on goal giving Warhawks goalie Sam Neely four saves on the afternoon.
Winning the WIAC Tournament is nothing new for the Pointers, as they have won 15 out of the total 19 WIAC Tournament Championships.
The win means the Pointers will advance to the NCAA Tournament as they received the WIAC's automatic bid.
The Pointers will find out where and when they will play on Monday when the NCAA releases the tournament bracket.
