SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Five different Pointers tallied a goal on Saturday evening as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team improved its record to 4-1 overall with a 5-1 victory over 15th-ranked Hamline University at Drake Arena.
The win over the Pipers comes one night after Hamline defeated third-ranked and defending Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) champion St. Norbert College 4-3.
UW-Stevens Point struck first, as Nic Polaski (Delafield/Wasson) scored his first goal of the season at the 5:28 mark of the opening period, sending a Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) pass into the net.
Hamline answered with the equalizer midway through the opening period, taking advantage of the man advantage to even the score at a goal apiece.
The Pointers responded at the 15 minute mark of the first with what proved to be the game-winner, as Alex Handy (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor School) scored his third goal of the season off a Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) and Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) assist, giving the Pointers the go-ahead goal and a 2-1 edge.
In the second period the Pointers tacked on two more goals, as Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) added an even strength goal, his third of the season, and Chad Boeckman (St. Louis, MO/Wentzville Holt) added a power play goal, his first of the season, giving UWSP a 4-1 lead.
In the third, Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) added his second goal of the season to cap the scoring.
Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) tallied 32 saves in goal on the evening while Hamline goalie Matt Hemingway stopped 27 of the Pointers 32 shots on net.
UW-Stevens Point (4-1) improves to 4-0 on the road this season and 3-0 against ranked teams.
UW-Stevens Point now returns home to host third-ranked St. Norbert College in a weekend series Nov. 12-13 at K.B.Willett Arena. Friday evening's game will be the Pointer's annual White Out Night. Pointer fans are encouraged to wear white in support of the team.
