Petersen's 14 leads Pointers Past Storm

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) tallied a team-high 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting to pace the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to a 78-60 victory over Simpson College in the opening round of the 2010 Buena Vista Women's Basketball Classic. 

Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) gave the Pointers their largest lead of the game's opening half with 9:16 remaining, as her three-pointer gave UWSP a 12 point edge, 25-13. Simpson slowly eroded the Pointers lead to just one, 30-29, at the halftime break. 

The Pointers rebuilt a double-digit advantage in the second half before the Storm again started to chip away at the lead. Simpson cut the deficit to just five, 57-52, with 7:20 remaining in the game before UW-Stevens Point closed out the game on a 21-8 run to pull away for the 18 point non-conference victory. 

Petersen added seven rebounds to her 14 point performance while Josi Schultz (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) finished as the only other Pointer in double figures, adding 11 off the bench and a team-high eight rebounds. 12 of the 14 Pointers who played scored points in the victory. 

Simpson's Stacey Schutjer led all scorers with 18 points. 

The Pointers (3-1) will play host Buena Vista Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
