Stout Stuns Pointers in Overtime

STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team held a two goal lead midway through the third period but was unable to hold off UW-Stout as the Blue Devils scored three consecutive goals including the game-winner in overtime to defeat the Pointers 5-4 on Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena.

The Pointers opened the scoring with a goal by Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) two minutes into the game and added another 29 seconds later with Max Bobrow (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) finding the back of the net. The first period would end with Stevens Point leading 2-0.

Stout cut the deficit in half in the second period with a goal by Chris Stafne that would be the only scoring of the second period as the Pointers held on to a one goal lead at the end of the second period with a score of 2-1.

The offense picked up for both teams in the third period as five total goals were scored including three by the Blue Devils to force overtime. Bobrow scored his second goal of the day on a power play early in the third period to increase the Point lead to 3-1.

Joel Whited started the Stout comeback with a goal three minutes later. Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) of Stevens Point answered soon after to bump the lead back up to two for the Pointers. That would be all the Pointer offense had left.

The end of the scoring affair at Willett would end with Stout scoring three straight goals including a sudden death winner by Bobby Kuehl. Whited and Danny Ryan Jr. scored the goals for the Blue Devils both coming after the 10:00 minute mark in the third period. Stout didn't take long to end the Pointers chances of splitting the weekend series as Kuehl scored the goal 23 seconds into the overtime period.

Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) tallied 26 saves in net while Tom Lescovich stopped 27 of the 31 Pointer shots on net.

UW-Stevens Point (4-5, 2-4 NCHA) takes the ice next hoping to stop the losing streak Friday, December 3, as the Pointers pay a visit UW-Superior, the game is set for a 7:00 pm faceoff.
