STEVENS POINT – On Senior Day,
Anthony Aker (Milwaukee/Brown Deer) brought back the opening kickoff for an 88-yard touchdown and the Pointers never looked back as they defeated UW-Platteville 45-24 on Saturday afternoon at Community Stadium at Goerke Field.
The Pioneers' Patrick O'Brien answered Aker's score with 1:53 left in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run to even the score at seven.
Stevens Point was able to reclaim the lead on a one-yard quarterback sneak at the goal line by Jake Swank (Oregon/Oregon). Jared Fohrman added a field goal on their next drive to give Point a 17-7 advantage.
Swank added another score as Mike Mullins (Appleton, WI/East) hauled in a pass and just crossed the goal line for a 15-yard touchdown reception.
Platteville forced a turnover with 1:21left and were able to get into Zach Litchfield's field goal range as he made it 24-10 at half.
Lee Vlasak tried to spark the Pioneers in the third quarter as he ran through the Pointers defense for a 69-yard score to close the gap to 24-17 Point.
The Pointers finally broke the game open as Keith Ingram (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside) scored from 42-yards out and Mike Griffin (Iola, WI/Iola-Scandinavia) punched it in from 11 to make it 38-17.
In the fourth, the Pioneers Nick Anderson added a touchdown on a one-yard run with 5:12 remaining but Peter Peterson was able to intercept him the next drive and bring it back for a 21-yard touchdown for a 45-24 final.
Ingram led the Pointers with 117 yards on 11 carries. Swank completed 12-of-25 passes for 114 yards with a touchdown and an interception and Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) grabbed four passes for 67 yards.
Brandon Stremkowski (Stevens Point/SPASH) led the team with 14 tackles and Matt Lunder (Waunakee/Waunakee) had 10 tackles and one sack. Peter Peterson (Pittsville/Pittsville) and Joe Mleziva (Casco, WI/Luxemburg-Casco) each added seven tackles and two interceptions.
Anderson completed 32-of-46 passes for 300 yards and was intercepted four times. Brian Holtrop caught 13 passes for 115 yards and Vlasak led the Pioneers in rushing with 114 yards on 22 carries.
UW-Stevens Point finishes the season at 7-3 overall and second in the WIAC with a 5-2 conference record.
