STEVENS POINT, Wis. — UW-Stevens Point football team (2-1, 0-0) defeated Pacific University (0-3, 0-0) 48-13 on Saturday. UWSP scored 35 unanswered points across five scoring drives to build a 35-0 advantage.
Ryan Thompson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) completed 20 of 30 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns and added 46 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
Anthony Lefebre (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) recorded a kickoff-return touchdown, rushed for 32 yards and caught two passes for 12 yards.
Zack Lynch (Brussels. Wis./Southern Door) rushed 15 times for 44 yards and a touchdown and added two receptions for 15 yards.
Paul Morris (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) led the Pointers' defense with four tackles and assisted a sack for a loss of five yards.
Josh Kristof (Lena, Wis./Lena) and
Brock Birrenkott (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) each chipped in three tackles.
Peyton Schwahn (Reedsville, Wis./Reedsville) had one sack, one forced fumble and one tackle.
The Pointers struck on the opening sequence when Lefebre returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and
Tyler Sodemann's (Waukesha, Wis./West) extra point made it 7-0.
Lucas Milz (South Wayne, Wis./Black Hawk) scored on a two-yard carry and Sodemann's extra point at 10:42 in the second quarter gave the Pointers a 14-0 lead.
The Pointers closed the second quarter with a 16-play, 75-yard drive that ended on Lynch's 1-yard touchdown run with 9 seconds left, to take a 21-0 lead into the break.
The Pointers produced two Thompson touchdown passes in the third quarter, with a 5-yard throw to
Ben Wollersheim (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) and then striking on a 20-yard pass to
Austin Phillips (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers), his first of the season, after Schwahn's sack and Kristof's fumble recovery. Pacific answered with a 66-yard touchdown run but missed the extra point. UWSP finished the quarter ahead 35-6.
The Pointers added two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns, with Thompson scoring from 9 yards at 14:53 before
Brady Zemple (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf) finished an 88-yard drive with a 10-yard run at 2:44. Pacific scored with 1:26 left, but the Pointers closed out a 48-13 win.
The Pointers will travel to Eau Claire on Oct. 3 to open WIAC play with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
