ST. PAUL, Minn. – UW-Stevens Point held a 20-14 advantage in shots and senior
Vicki Bieschke (Oconomowoc/Waukesha Memorial) tallied two goals and an assist as the Pointer women's soccer team defeated host Macalester 4-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
The win advances the Pointers to the second round where they will play Concordia-Moorhead, who advanced thanks to a 2-0 win over Northwestern (Minn.) 2-0. The Pointers and Cobbers will take to the pitch in St. Paul at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Sarah Gugel (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) got things going for the Pointers in the game's 28th minute, scoring just her second goal of the season on a pass from Mary Jean Cornelius (West Bend/West), putting UWSP in front 1-0.
In the second half, Bieschke scored in the 57th minute, her sixth of the season, off a pass from Kirsti Nickels (Appleton/East), giving the Pointers a 2-0 advantage
Just 48 seconds later, Macalester tallied their first of game, a shot from Lauryn Gutierrez, cutting the Pointer lead in half.
Under two minutes later Angela Galow added her eighth goal of the season to give the Pointers a two goal advantage, 3-1. Bieschke later tallied her second goal of the game and seventh of the season, scoring unassisted, to give the Pointers a 4-1 edge.
Macalester added a late goal, but the Pointer defense, anchored by goalkeeper Liz Hunter (Stevens Point/SPASH), shut the door on the Pointers victory.
The win improves the Pointers record all-time in the NCAA Tournament to 15-14-1.
