EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team will have to share the 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) crown after a 1-0 overtime loss in the season finale to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday afternoon.
The Pointers will share the league title, their 14th, with the UW-Whitewater Warhawks, who matched UWSP's 7-1 mark in conference play. UW-Stevens Point holds the tiebreaker over Whitewater and will be the top seed in the six-team WIAC tournament that begins Nov. 2. The Pointers receive a first round by and will host the lowest remaining seed on Thursday, Nov. 4.
Scoreless through regulation for the second straight game, the Pointers did hold a 19-14 advantage over the Blugolds in shots, but could not slip a goal past UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper Amanda Hakala.
In the 102nd minute, Eau Claire's Shyla Gilbertson scored her third goal of the season, scoring off a corner kick to secure the victory for the Blugolds.
Liz Hunter (Stevens Point/SPASH) tallied eight saves in net for the Pointers, who suffered just their second loss of the season.
The Pointers will now await news of their Thursday WIAC tournament opponent as they begin their run to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
