DULUTH – Down 1-0 after just four minutes of play, the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored seven unanswered goals on their way to a 7-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) victory Friday evening against the 11th-ranked Saints of Saint Scholastica.
The win is the first of the young season for the Pointers who were the road team for the Saints season opener.
Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) started the Pointer scoring at the 18:33 mark of the opening period with his second goal of the season, assisted by Alex Handy (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor School) on the power play.
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) stuck for the Pointers just 27 seconds later off a pass from Chad Boeckman (St. Louis, MO/Wentzville Holt) to give the Pointers the go-ahead goal.
In the second period the Pointers stayed hot, as Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) and Kyle Heck (Plover, WI/SPASH) each tallied goals to make the Pointer advantage 4-1.
In the third, the Pointes tacked on three more insurance goals as Alex Handy (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor School), Kyle Politz (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) and Jake Skjodt (Carmel, IN/Cathedral) each tallied goals for UWSP.
Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) tallied the win in net for the Pointers, recording 25 saves including 15 in the opening period to give UWSP the win over the ranked Saints. The Pointers touched up Saints netminder Brennan Poderzay for seven goals with only two coming on the power play.
