WINNECONNE – Three runners finished with top-20 times on Saturday for the UW-Stevens Point Cross Country teams, as the Pointers ran their way to a fifth place team finish at the star-studded Brooks Cross Country Invitational at the Lake Breeze Golf Course.
The event featured nine men's programs ranked among the nation's top-25 by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) including top-ranked North Central College, second ranked Washington University (Mo.) and the seventh-ranked Pointers.
Tim Thornburg (Delafield/Kettle Moraine) paced the Pointers with a time of 24 minutes, 52 seconds on the five mile course. The time was just 30 seconds off the top finisher, Michael Spain of North Central in the 575-man field.
Joel Heroux (Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol) finished 18th for the Pointers with a time of 25 minutes flat and Terry Witkowski (Delafield, WI/Kettle Moraine) finished 19th with a time of 25:05.
Rounding out the scoring for the Pointers was Sean Hasenstein (Sheboygan/Sheboygan Lutheran) with a time of 25:29 and Alex Steiner (Chilton, WI/Chilton) who finished with a time of 25:41.
Rounding out the top seven for the Pointers was Evan Cooper (Delafield, WI/Kettle Moraine) and Spencer Siddons (Andover, MN/Andover) who finished 72nd and 88th, respectively.
The Pointers return to Oshkosh next Friday, Oct. 22nd for one final tune-up before the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships in Eau Claire.
