Pointers, Johnnies Skate to 3-3 Tie

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime and the eventual tie against St. John's University in non-conference hockey action Friday evening at Municipal Athletics Complex.

Kyle Greco (Hillside, IL) gave the Pointers the early advantage, scoring at the 4:45 mark of the opening period off a Luke Nesper (Eagle River) pass.

St. John answered with a trio of goals in the first period, as Conor Rooney scored twice and Karl Gilbert added a goal of his own for the Johnnies, turning the tables and giving the hosts a 3-1 edge.

The Pointers fought their way back, as Nesper scored his fourth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 6:37 mark of the second, cutting the deficit to just one, 3-2.

Sam Graham (Los Angeles, CA) scored the equalizer at the 14:37 mark of the third, his second of the season, off assists from Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI) and Garrett Suter (Madison), tying the game at 3-3 and forcing overtime.

In the overtime period, all four Pointer shots on goal were turned away by Johnnies keeper Tony Civello, an the UWSP defense did not allow a shot on goal, as the team's skated to the 3-3 deadlock.

Nick Graves (Hewitt) tallied 33 saves in net for the Pointers while his counterpart Civello recorded 29.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they face Concordia-Moorhead in Minnesota. Action begins at 2 p.m.
