EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team picked up a 4-3 victory over UW-Eau Claire at Hobbs Ice Center on Friday evening, gaining two points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings.
After a scoreless first period,
Sam Graham (Los Angeles, CA/Ridgewood/Mira Costa) gave the Pointers a 1-0 advantage with his fourth goal of the season. Midway through the period,
Harrison Niemann (Canton, MI/Novi) and
Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL/Ursuline) added goal of their own, giving the Pointers a 3-0 edge at the 14:57 mark.
UW-Eau Claire got on the board at the 15:57 mark of the second, cutting the Pointers lead to just two, 3-1.
In the third, Eau Claire scored on the power play to push the score to 3-2 and cutting the UWSP lead to just one.
Graham scored his second goal of the game and fifth of the year under a minute later, pushing the Pointers advantage back to two goals, 4-2, off a pass from
Kyle Greco (Hillside, IL/Fenwick) and
Kent Detlefsen (Lakeville, MN/Rochester).
Eau Claire added their third goal of the game at the 9:45 mark, but the Pointer defense and
Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) shut down the Blugolds down, surviving a barrage of Eau Claire shots to secure the victory.
Graves tallied 38 saves to secure the victory while Brandon Stephenson stopped 25 Pointer shots for UW-Eau Claire in the loss.
The Pointers return to action on Feb. 5-6 when they travel to UW-Superior and St. Scholastica. Action both nights begins at 7 p.m.
