Pointers Start New Year with Victory Over Vikings

APPLETON – UW-Stevens Point returned from the holiday break in resounding fashion on Saturday evening, scoring five goals, three in the third period, to start 2010 with a 5-2 victory over the Vikings of Lawrence University in men's hockey action at the Appleton Ice Arena.

Jon Madden (Brighton, MI)
started the scoring for the Pointers, notching his team-leading eighth goal of the season, before the end of the opening period, giving UW-Stevens Point the 1-0 advantage.

Alex Handy (Carmel, IN) opened the scoring in the second period with his third goal of the season just 28 seconds into the second, giving the Pointers the two goal advantage.

Lawrence scored their first goal of the contest at the 4:33 mark of the second, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1, as Marc Howe tallied his 11th goal of the year for the Vikings and completing the second period scoring.

In the third, a trio of Pointers added goals as UWSP began to pull away. Travis Erstad (Stevens Point), Garrett Suter (Madison) and Johnny Meo (Vernon Hills, IL) each tallied goals as the Pointers pulled away for the 5-2 victory.

Nick Graves (Hewitt) tallied the victory for the Pointers in goal, stopping 26 of the Viking's 28 shots on goal while Lawrence's Evan Johnson suffered the loss while recording 42 saves.

UW-Stevens Point (7-8) closes out the nonconference portion of their schedule January 8-9 with a trip to Minnesota for games against St. Johns and Concordia-Moorhead.
