SUPERIOR – After traveling over 1,000 miles this week, the 24th-ranked Pointer women's basketball team survived its final test of the week Saturday afternoon, winning a close one against the UW-Superior Yellowjackets 59-55.
The win improves the Pointers to 13-3 overall, 5-2 in league play, while the 'Jackets fall to 6-9 overall, 1-6 in conference play.
The Pointers jumped out to an early seven point lead in the game's early minutes, taking an 11-4 edge at the 13:23 mark. The Pointers soon pushed the lead to double digits and led by as many as 12, 30-18, with just over two minutes remaining in the opening stanza and held an eight point edge heading into halftime, 32-24.
In the second half, the Yellowjackts began to chip away at the Pointer advantage until, with 7:31 remaining in the game, Superior took a one point edge, 47-46. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch until the Pointers took the lead for good off a
Britta Petersen (Luck) layup with 4:11 remaining and held on for the four point victory, 59-55.
Petersen led the Pointers with 16 points on six-of-nine shooting from the floor, adding three assists and three rebounds on the day.
Josi Schultz (Eau Claire) added 11 points and a team-high five rebounds off the bench to finish as the only other Pointer in double figures. The Pointers were without the services of guard
Andrea Flease (New London), who missed the game due to injury.
The Pointers finished the day shooting 41.3 percent from the floor, connecting on just two of 14 three-point attempts (.143).
Superior's Hailey Hart led all scorers with 18 points.
UW-Stevens Point returns home to face UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
