Defense leads Pointers Past Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE-An almost perfect shooting performance by Britta Petersen (Luck) led the UW-Stevens Point (12-3, 4-2 WIAC) women's basketball team over the UW-Platteville Pioneers 66-45 at Bo Ryan Court Wednesday evening.

Petersen finished the game 9 of 10 shooting to lead all scorers with 18 points. The Pointers never trailed in the contest and ended the first half up 38-9. Stevens Point shot 52 percent for the game while holding Platteville to just over 29 percent for the evening.

The Pointers kept the pressure on in the second half going up by as many as 41 with 5:52 remaining. But the Pioneers forced several turnovers in the game's final minutes to close out the game on a 22-4 run.

Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin) added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Pointers and Andrea Flease (New London) contributed with five assists.

Charity Stotmeister led the Pioneers with 17 points.

The Pointers return to action when they travel to UW-Superior on Saturday, January 16 with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m., in the final leg of a 1,050 mile road trip for the week.
