Pointers go 3-1 over Weekend in Kohawk Invite

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The Pointers rolled this weekend, Sept. 25-26, earning three tournament victories in four matches at the Coe College Kohawk Invite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Pam Nora (Forest Lake, Minn.) was named the Tournament MVP and Morgan Bartkowiak (Slinger) made the All-Tournament team.

The Pointers walked away as the tournament champions by defeating Coe College, Knox College, and Faith Baptist Bible College. Their lone loss came to the hands of Clarke College.

The Pointers first match of the weekend was against the Crusaders of Clarke College, one in which the Pointers fell in all three games by scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-19. Nora led the Pointers with six kills and three digs, while Kaitlin Wolfe (Roscoe, IL) added 18 assists and four digs. Michaela Rheineck (St. Paul, MN) led all Pointers with two solo blocks and five assisted blocks.

In the Pointers second match of the tournament, they defeated tournament host Coe College 3-1, with match scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, and 25-22. The Pointers were led by Nora, who posted 14 kills, one service ace, and 19 digs.Christina Brinkman (Bristol) added 11 kills and 14 digs and Rhieneck finished with one solo block and two assisted blocks.

The Pointers defeated the Prairie Fire of Knox College in four games, 25-12, 25-13, 19-25, and 25-9. Nora and Brinkman finished with five kills apiece and a combined six service aces. Lizzy Taylor (Eau Claire) led the Pointers in digs with 11 and Bartkowiak had six kills, two service aces, one solo block and three assisted blocks.

UWSP finished the tournament with a sweep against the Eagles of Faith Baptist Bible College, by scores of 25-8, 25-7, 25-22. Nora led all Pointers with nine kills and added five kills. Bartkowiak cemented her all-tournament honors by smashing seven service aces and adding four digs. Wolfe chipped in with a team high five assists.

The Pointers (8-10, 1-1) return to action Wednesday, Sept. 30, when they host the Titans of UW-Oshkosh (14-0, 3-0), ranked No. 1 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Berg Gymnasium.
