Pointers Tough out 2-1 Victory over Warhawks

Box Score Box Score STEVENS POINT – The Pointers (6-2, 4-0) used timely scoring and stout defense to hold onto a 2-1 victory over the Warhawks of UW-Whitewater (5-4, 1-1) on Parent's Day at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. Point took the lead 34 seconds into the game, when Jackie Spees scored her team leading fifth goal of the season on a pass from Kirsti Nickels, and the Pointers never relinquished it.

The Pointers took the 1-0 lead into halftime, as the Pointer and Warhawk defenses held strong for the remainder of the first half. Both goalies, Liz Hunter (UWSP) and Jacqueline Piasecki (UWW), recorded five first half saves.

Freshman Sammy Greer ended the scoring drought in the second half when she beat the drawn out Piasecki in the 63rd minute and slammed in her second goal of the season, putting the Pointers up 2-0.

The Warhawks responded with a goal of their own in the 76th minute, when Emily Gerber found a clearing between three Pointer defenders in front of the net and drilled it past Hunter for her 11th goal of the season, putting the score at 2-1.

Hunter and the Pointer defense managed to hold off an aggressive Warhawk attack in the final 10 minutes of action to seal the 2-1 conference victory. Spees led all Pointers in shots on goal with five and Greer added two. Hunter finished the day with nine saves, four of which came off the leg of Gerber.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when they travel to St. Thomas University for a non-conference match-up against the Tommies in St. Paul, Minn. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
