ROLLA, Mo. – Jared Beckwith (Baraboo) connected with Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) on two touchdown passes and he rushed for another on Saturday afternoon as the Pointers evened their record at 1-1 with a 21-17 nonconference victory over Missouri Science and Technology.

The Miners of Missouri S&T jumped in front early in the second quarter off a Joe Drahos field goal, capping a 13 play, 53 yard drive.

UW-Stevens Point answered just before halftime, as Beckwith found Jenkins on a nine yard pitch and catch, wrapping up a 10 play 80 yard drive with just :44 left on the clock, giving the Pointers the 7-3 halftime edge.

After the Miners went 3-and-out to start the third quarter, Beckwith found tight end Mike Mullins (Appleton) on two first down tosses and then capped off the scoring drive with a one yard touchdown run to give UWSP the 14-3 advantage.

Missouri S&T answered with an 11 play scoring drive of their own, as Jason Schlueter scored on an eight yard touchdown run, but the Joe Drahos extra point failed, leaving the Pointers in front 14-9.

At the start of the fourth, Jenkins and Beckwith connected again, this time on a 23-yard play to put the pointers in front 21-9. On the ensuing drive, Missouri S&T quarterback Jason Schlueter connected with Matt Thomas on a 33 yard pass play, followed by a successful two-point conversion, to cut the deficit to 21-17 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.

The Pointers marched right back down the field, but Beckwith was intercepted in the end zone, as the Miners defense turned the Pointers away.

After the teams traded punts, Missouri S&T put together a drive starting on their own 20, and after driving down the field, had first and goal from the Pointer eight, but after an incomplete pass to stop the clock on first down and a incomplete pass on second down, the Pointers Peter Peterson (Pittsville) tackled the Miners Bobby Pettis in bounds for a four yard loss at the 12 yard line, ending the game and the last chance scoring opportunity for Missouri S&T.

Beckwith finished the day 28-of-39 for 330 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Jenkins finished the day with 15 receptions for 187 yards and two scores. Mike Ferron (Racine) finished the day with 15 rushes for 56 yards, a 3.1 yard average.

Joe Mleziva (Casco) led the Pointers with 19 tackles, 14 solo, one for a loss and one interception. Peterson finished with 10 tackles, three for a loss of 14 yards, including the game saver as time expired.

The Pointers (1-1) return to action next Saturday when they travel to Azusa, Calif. to face Azusa Pacific. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. local, 6 p.m. pacific.
