PLATTEVILLE – In what proved to be a somewhat up-and-down opening to the Pointers final series of the regular season, the Pointers defeated UW-Platteville 10-1 in game one of a doubleheader before falling to the Pioneers in game two, 11-1 in seven innings.
The Pointers and Pioneers close out the regular season on Sunday, May 3, with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
UW-Stevens Point's
Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay) pitched a gem in game one, scattering three Pioneer hits over eight innings, allowing the only run, and striking out seven. Reliever
Max Mittelstaedt (Oshkosh) came in to pitch the final two innings, allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out three.
At the plate, the Pointers drew bases-loaded walks three times in the first two innings and plated another run in the third to jump in front 5-0. The Pointers scored another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth before Platteville plated a run in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 8-1.
From there, the Pointers plated a run in both the seventh and eighth innings as they cruised to the 10-1 victory.
Kyle Cummings (Prentice) finished the day 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one.
Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh) finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and
Jon Schoch (Chippewa Falls) finished 2-for-6 with a run and a RBI.
The Pioneers used eight pitchers in game one, with starter Joe Cox took the loss, pitching just 2/3 of an inning, walking three and hitting one before being pulled.
In game two, the Pioneers turned the tables on the Pointers, as they touched up Pointer starter
Garrett Nix (Osseo) for seven runs, three earned, in just three innings, scoring three runs in the home half of the first and four in the third.
In the fourth, the Pioneers again plated two runs and added another in the sixth to jump in front 10-0. The Pointers lone run came in the top of the seventh, as Schock singled in
Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire).
In the bottom of the seventh, Platteville's Kevin Osmanski singled in Levi Ney, ending the game via the ten-run rule.
Nix suffered the loss, his first of the 2009 season. He struck out two and walked two.
Kyle Mack took the win for Platteville, his fifth of the season, throwing a complete seven innings, striking out two and walking three, but scattered eight Pointer hits, twice getting out of bases-loaded jams.
