Pointers Fall to Tommies in 17 Inning Marathon

Box Score

OSHKOSH – In the longest game in NCAA Division III Postseason history, St. Thomas' Taylor Rahm belted a 1-0 offering over the outfield fence, giving the Tommies the 5-4 walk-off victory over the UW-Stevens Point Pointers in the opening round game of the 2009 NCAA Regional Tournament at E.J. Schneider Field.

The Pointers (29-15) will now face elimination when they take on Beloit College (28-8) in action beginning at 1 p.m. in Oshkosh. Wednesday's third game, featuring the St. Scholastica Saints and St. Norbert Green Knights was postponed due to rain and will be Thursday's first game, scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.

The Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as Jordan Rennicke (Mequon) scored on a Eric Fritz (Custer) single to right field.

UWSP tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run home run by Brad Archambeau (Watertown), giving the Pointers the 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, one swing of the bat gave the Tommies a 4-3 edge, after back-to-back errors by the Pointers allowed a bases-loaded situation for St. Thomas' Brian Schmitz. Schmitz sent the Scott Williams (Baraboo)' offering over the leftfield fence for the grand slam and the Tommie lead.

The Pointers tied the game in the seventh, as Fritz scored on a Archambeau single to centerfield, 4-4.

From there, neither team was able to capitalize until Rahm connected on the offering from Jeff Zielke (Watertown) in the bottom of the 17th, giving the Tommies the victory. The Pointers had runners in scoring position four times in the extra frames, but were unable to get a runner across. The Tommies had one runner reach third base in extras.

Pointer starter Williams threw nine solid innings, scattering four hits. All four Tommies' runs against Williams were unearned. He also struck out six. Zielke came on for 7-plus innings of relief, scattering two hits, striking out three before suffering the walk-off hit. The loss was his second of the season.

Tommies reliever Kris Edwards notched the victory, his first of the season, throwing five innings in relief of Matt Schuld, who threw the first 12 innings for St. Thomas, surrendering 10 hits and four runs, three earned while striking out nine.
