Koback Hits for the Cycle; Pointers Take Two from La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team belted 39 hits and four home runs in a sweep of the Eagles of UW-La Crosse, taking the first game 16-6 in eight innings before taking the nightcap 14-5 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action Saturday afternoon.

The Pointers improve to 17-9 overall, 5-5 in league play while the Eagles drop to 16-9 overall, 9-5 in the WIAC.

In game one, the Pointers used 22 hits, including a grand slam by Cody Koback (Plover) to jump out to the big lead. Koback belted a double in the fourth, a single in the sixth and a triple in the eighth to go along with his home run in the fifth to finish the day 4-6 with 5 RBIs. Sam Spurney (Manitowoc) went 4-5 with three runs and three RBIs and Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh/Oshkosh West) also added three RBIs.

Garrett Nix (Osseo) earned the win for the Pointers, going 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs while striking out three.

In game two, the Pointers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but La Crosse tied the game in the bottom of the frame. The Pointers added two more runs in the top of the fourth and four more in the fifth to again take the lead by a score of 8-2.

La Crosse cut the deficit to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but three runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings by the Pointers sealed the 14-5 win.

Joel Delorit (Sturgeon Bay) picked up the win in the nightcap, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, both unearned, while striking out seven.

At the plate, Eric Fritz (Custer) finished 3-5 with one run and a RBI. Kyle Cummings (Prentice) went 3-4 with three runs and two RBIs and Brad Archambeau (Watertown) finished with four RBI.

The Pointers and Eagles close out the season series on Sunday, April 19 in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at Noon in La Crosse.
