STEVENS POINT – Walk-off hits by
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) and
Cody Koback (Plover, SPASH) capped off a pair of wins for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team Wednesday afternoon against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) rival UW-Stout at University Field.
A grand slam by Richter off Blue Devils' reliever Matt Phipps gave the Pointers (11-3, 2-0WIAC) a 12-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, ending the game on the ten-run rule. A Koback double off Dave Oestreich in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two completed a three run rally which gave UW-Stevens Point a 5-4 win.
In game one, the Pointers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first without recording a hit; as two walks, a hit by pitch and an error translated into a pair of runs. UW-Stevens Point put up three more runs in the fourth inning, and one each in the fifth and sixth to stretch its lead to 7-1. The Pointers scored five runs in the seventh as three walks and a hit by pitch preceded Richter's grand slam over the centerfield wall.
Pointer pitcher
Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes, Wilmot) threw six solid innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six. Blue Devils' starter Nate Hanson was charged with the loss despite giving up only three of the UW-Stevens Points 12 runs in five innings of work.
UW-Stout had the Pointers against the wall in game two, holding a 4-2 lead with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the ninth. Singles by
Kyle Cummings (Prentice) and
Kevin Thomas (Oshkosh, West) and a
Brad Archambeau (Watertown) walk loaded the bases for UW-Stevens Point with two outs. After the Blue Devils failed to record the final out on a Richter fielder's choice, Koback unloaded a double into the gap which plated the final two runs.
Pointers' reliever
Jeff Zielke (Watertown) picked up the win after hurling three no-hit innings and racking up five strikeouts.
Both Koback and Thomas managed a pair of hits in both games, while Koback and Richter each collected four RBI on the day.
