Pointers Fall to St. Thomas in NCAA Second Round

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Matt Moses (Fond du Lac, St. Mary Springs) led the way with 16 points and Louis Hurd (Portage) added 11 but it was not enough as the top-ranked Tommies of St. Thomas handed the fourth-ranked Pointers a 53-50 loss in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Tommies held UWSP to just 34 percent shooting for the game, 18.8 percent from beyond the arc for the game.

In a low scoring affair for both teams, the Pointers took a 6-3 lead at the 12:46 mark of the first half off a Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids, Lincoln) layup. St. Thomas answered with a 13-4 run over the next six minutes to take their largest lead of the first half, 16-10. Both teams battled for the remainder of the half, and St. Thomas took a four-point lead into the break, up 21-17.

In the second, the Pointers took a two point lead, 28-26, with 15:34 remaining in the game. After both teams battled back-and-forth for the next several minutes, St. Thomas pulled ahead by five, at the 10:19 mark, 38-33.

UWSP kept the Tommies close down the stretch, twice cutting the lead to one including 47-46 with 2:24 remaining, but St. Thomas connected on all six of their free-throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.

Moses, Beamish and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua, Lakeland) all added six rebounds on the evening.
