Britta Petersen (Luck, Luck) tallied a team-high 20 points as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team closed out the regular season and Senior Day in style, winning their first outright Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title since 1987, defeating UW-Platteville 84-63.
The Pointers jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and continued to add to their lead until the scoreboard showed a 16-point advantage for the Pointers, 35-19, with 4:35 remaining in the opening half. From there, Platteville cut the deficit to 10, 38-28 just before the half, but
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point, Mineral Point) connected on a jumper with :20 seconds left to give the Pointers a 12-point halftime lead.
In the second half, the Pioneers cut their deficit to seven with 15:00 remaining but the Pointers responded, pushing the lead back to double-digits at the 12:33 mark, 54-43. From there, the Pointers never looked back leading by as many as 23 down the stretch as they coasted to the 21-point victory.
Petersen collected a team-high six rebounds to go along with her 20 points while
Ashley Baker (Vesper, Pittsville) turned in a 14 point performance to go along with four rebounds.
Janell Van Gomple (DeForest, DeForest) added 11 points and Sporle added 10 to round out the Pointers who scored in double figures.
Stacia Nemitz of Platteville led all scorers with 23 points including a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line while Charity Stotmeister added 16 in the loss.
The Pointers (22-3, 14-2 WIAC) will now await the results of Tuesday night's WIAC tournament games to find out who they will host in the semifinal round of the tournament on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. in Berg Gym. The game will be the second in a men's and women's doubleheader that evening.
