STEVENS POINT – The Pointer men's hockey team had more than paid their dues and all their hard work finally paid off on Saturday evening as the Pointers picked up their first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) victory over ninth-ranked UW-Superior 2-1 at K.B. Willett Arena.
All the Pointer scoring came in the first period as
Nic Polaski (Delafield) scored a power play goal at the 7:39 mark of the game's opening period and
Luke Nesper (Eagle River) added an even goal just 18 seconds later, giving the Pointers the early two goal advantage.
Superior added a power play goal at the 18:40 mark of the second period as they began to make a comeback attempt, but the Pointer defense held off an onslaught of Yellowjacket shots in the third period to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Thomas Speer (Janesville) picked up the win in net for the Pointers, stopping 30 Superior shots on goal to earn his first victory of the season. Garrett Tinkham took the loss for Superior, stopping 19 pointer shots on net.
UW-Stevens Point return to action next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14 as they host UW-Eau Claire for the final games before the holiday break. A reminder that Saturday will be “Black Out” and “Put a Check to Cancer” night at K.B. Willett Arena.
