Pointers Earn Florida Sweep

DAYTONA, Fla. - Three Pointers scored in double figures, led by Britta Petersen's (Luck) 14, as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a 54-52 victory over Mary Washington in the 2009 Land Of Magic Classic.

With the score tied at 12 midway through the opening half, the Pointers used a 9-0 run to open up a nine point advantage, 21-12, with 6:37 remaining in the opening stanza. The Eagles chipped away at the Pointer advantage, cutting the deficit to one, 24-23, with just over a minute remaining, but a Claire Glodowski (Amherst) jumper with :16 left gave the Pointers a three point halftime edge.

In the second half, both teams battled back-and-forth but the Pointers never relinquished the lead, leading by as many as seven down the stretch to pull out the two point victory.

Petersen collected a team-high seven rebounds to go along with her 14 points while Cassie Bandow (Plover) and Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin) each added 12 in the victory.

Mary Washington's Jenna McRae led all scorers with 18 points while Carol Dye had 11.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Jan. 6 when they host UW-Oshkosh in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
