Britta Petersen (Luck) had a team-high 16 points and
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin) added 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Pointers overcame a 12 point deficit at the half to defeat the Falcons of Concordia (Wis.) 59-56 in the 2009 Land of Magic Classic.
The Pointers led only once in the game's early minutes as Concordia was in control for much of the opening stanza. With the score tied at 20 with just under six minutes remaining in the opening half, the Falcons used a 14-2 run to open up their 12 point edge at the break, 34-22.
In the second half, the Pointers chipped away at the Falcons lead until
Cassie Bandow's
(Plover) jumper at the 12:28 mark gave the Pointers the lead, 39-38. The Pointers never trailed after that, building a seven point advantage, but a scrappy Falcon team stayed close, tying the score four times down the stretch before the Pointers pulled away with the three point victory.
Petersen added five rebounds and three assist on the day while Bandow added seven points in the victory.
Concordia's Camille Parsons led all scorers with 18 points and Pearl Wallace added 12 points and 17 rebounds in the loss.
The Pointers return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 30 when they face Mary Washington (Va.) in action beginning at 11 a.m.
