Pointers Open WIAC with Victory Over Stout

Box Score

MENOMONIE - Britta Petersen (Luck) poured in 20 points and collected 10 rebounds to lead three UW-Stevens Point women's basketball players in double figure scoring as the 15th-ranked Pointers opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Wednesday evening to a 78-63 victory over the Blue Devils of UW-Stout.

Four ties and 10 lead changes marked an up-and-down first half for the Pointers, as neither team could gain more than a five point edge. With 1:28 remaining, Petersen's jumper sparked a 9-1 run by the Pointers as they closed out the opening half with a 44-36 advantage.

In the second half, after the Blue Devils cut the deficit to just six, 52-46, with 16:09 remaining, the Pointers piled on the scoring and built a 16 point edge midway through the half and never looked back, holding the Blue Devils to just 36 percent from the floor in the second half to cruise to the 15 point victory.

While the Pointers shot just 39.1 percent from the floor for the game and 18.8 percent from beyond the arch, they turned the ball over just 11 times while forcing 16 Blue Devil turnovers.

Petersen chipped in three assists to go with her double-double while Andrea Flease (New London) added 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists on the evening, playing all but one minute of the game. Ashley Windt (Hurley) chipped in 16 points and seven boards in the victory.

Julia Hirssig led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the Blue Devils and added a team-best seven rebounds in the loss.

UW-Stevens Point (5-1, 1-0 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 5 when they travel to UW-River Falls for a 3 p.m. match-up with the Falcons.
