Pointers drop heartbreaker to Blue Devils

Box Score | Coach Nichol Postgame

MENOMONIE – UW-Stout's Joel Gaulrapp scored with just 37 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Blue Devils a 5-4 overtime victory over the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The loss drops the Pointers to 2-7 overall, 0-6 in the NCHA. UW-Stout improves to 4-2-2 overall, 2-2-2 in the NCHA.

Entering the third locked in a 1-1 tie, the Blue Devils scored just 1:23 into the final period to take a 2-1 lead. The Pointers answered at the 4:40 mark of the period as Garrett Suter (Madison) scored his third goal of the season, tying the score at 2-2.

Stout again responded with a goal one minute later, pulling in front 3-2. Stevens Point responded to take their first lead of the game with power play goals from Donnie Hallmark (Ontario, CA), his fifth of the year, and Jon Madden (Brighton, MI), his third of the season, bringing the score to 4-3.

But the Blue Devils would not be denied and with just :12 left in the game, Stout's Joe Beaudette scored his second goal of the season on the power play, knotting the score at 4-4 and forcing overtime.

The Pointers hurled four shots on net in the overtime period to the Blue Devils six, but it was the sixth Blue Devil shot that was the difference as Gaulrapp capitalized on a Pointer turnover deep in their own zone, finding the back of the net and giving Stout the victory.

Nick Graves (Hewitt) tallied 33 saves on the evening, suffering the loss while Tom Lescovich earned the victory in net stopping 31 Pointer shots.

UW-Stevens Point will look to snap their four game losing skid on Saturday, Nov. 28 against the Sabers of Marian University. Action is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
