Football rolls past Pioneers 41-27

PLATTEVILLE – Down 20-13 heading into the final quarter on Saturday afternoon, the UW-Stevens Point football team scored 28 unanswered points, pulling away from the Pioneers of UW-Platteville and cruising to the 41-27 victory in the final conference game of the season.

The Pointers (7-3, 6-1 WIAC) have now won 19 straight against the Pioneers (3-7, 1-6 WIAC).
Both teams committed five turnovers on the day, as both teams recorded four interceptions and one lost fumble.

Trailing 7-3 in the second quarter, Keith Ingram (Milwaukee) scored on a 1-yard touchdown scamper to give UW-Stevens Point a 10-7 advantage with 7:16 to go in the opening half. Andrew Clohan (Stevens Point) added a 24-yard field goal with 4:03 remaining to give the Pointers a 13-7 edge.

Platteville retook the lead with a minute remaining in the first half, as Mitch Shadley scored on a nine yard touchdown run and Tony Smidl's extra point gave the Pioneers the 14-13 advantage.

Smidl and the Pioneers added a pair of field goals in the third to push the advantage to 20-13, putting the Pointers dreams of a season-ending victory in jeopardy.

In the fourth, the Pointer offense came alive, led by two touchdowns each from Ingram and Anthony Aker (Milwaukee) as the Pointers vaulted in front 41-20 with 3:15 remaining.

A late touchdown by Platteville was not enough, as the Pointers rolled to the 41-27 final.

Ingram led the way for the Pointers, tallying 210 of the Pointers 504 yards of total offense on just 24 carries with an 8.8 yard average. Aker led all receivers with nine catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jared Beckwith (Baraboo) finished the day 18 of 33 for 222 yards, throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Pierce FollansbeeDelong (Cumberland) led the Pointer defense with seven tackles, five solo and added 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks for a loss of 16 yards. Kody Morgan (Iola) and Peter Peterson (Pittsville) each also recorded seven tackles in the victory.

The Pointer defense held the Pioneers to just 73 yards rushing on the day and 280 thorough the air.

UW-Stevens Point will now await word of a possible NCAA Division III Playoff bid. The announcement of the 32-team field will be made Sunday afternoon.
