Box Score Box Score

OSHKOSH – The Pointer football team (4-2, 3-0) remained unbeaten in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Titans of UW-Oshkosh 24-17 at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on homecoming.

Pointer quarterback Jared Beckwith (Baraboo) put the Pointers on the board first with a three yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. The touchdown capped off an 11 play, 73 yard drive. Andrew Clohan's (Stevens Point) successful point after attempt put UWSP in front 7-0.

The Titans answered the Pointers back on their next possession when quarterback Nate Wara connected with Paul Coburn for the 25 yard touchdown pass. The touchdown pass was Wara's fifth on the year.

Clohan made his first career field goal on the next Pointer possession from 25 yards out. The kick put UWSP up 10-7, a lead they would not squander again.

With 3:41 remaining in the first half, the Pointers gave the ball to fullback Joe Francar (Mishicot) for just the second time this season and he answered with a one yard touchdown run, making the score 17-7 at halftime.

Both teams traded several possessions throughout the third quarter until the Titans chipped into the 10 point deficit with another Wara to Coburn hookup, this time from nine yards out. The Pointers held a narrow 17-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) hauled in his 10th touchdown reception of the season with 7:13 left in the fourth quarter. The touchdown reception was the 22nd in his career, making him UWSP's fifth all-time leader in career touchdown receptions, one ahead of Don Moehling and Theo Blanco.

The Titans fought hard to get the game back to one possession and were rewarded when kicker Andy Lindsay connected on a 22 yard field goal with 5:18 remaining in the contest.

Pointer defensive back Joe Mleziva (Casco) sealed the victory when he intercepted Wara with 1:46 remaining in the game, allowing the Pointer offense to run the clock out.

The Pointers were once again led on offense by Beckwith, who finished with 306 yards and one touchdown on 25-37 passing. Jenkins finished the day with 13 catches for 189 yards and one touchdown while Aaron Leonhardt (Baraboo) caught six balls for 49 yards.

The Pointers rushing attack was in full force with backup running back Garrett Medenwald (Green Bay) making the most of his career high 28 carries. He finished the day with 130 yards, a 4.6 yards per carry average and a long of 19.

Linebacker John Jones (Oregon) led the Pointer defense with nine tackles. Mleziva and Peter Peterson (Pittsville) chipped in with seven tackles apiece and Matt Lunder (Waunakee) contributed with six tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

The victory keeps the Pointers in a first place WIAC tie with UW-Whitewater.

The Pointers return to action next Saturday, Oct. 24, when they travel to face the Eagles of UW-La Crosse (5-1, 2-1). The Eagles are coming off a thrilling triple overtime 49-47 victory over UW-River Falls. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
