LA CROSSE - The Pointers stayed unbeaten in conference play Wednesday evening, defeating UW-La Crosse 4-0 behind two goals from
Kirsti Nickels (Appleton) and one goal each from
Vicki Bieschke (Oconomowoc) and
Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids).
The win sets up a battle of undefeated conference teams on Saturday, Oct. 17 as the Blugold of UW-Eau Claire, currently 5-0-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play visit the Point Soccer Bowl at 1 p.m.
Bieschke put the Pointers on the board at the 8:48 mark of the first half, as she took a
Mary Jean Cornelius (West Bend) pass and found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season, giving UWSP the 1-0 edge over the Eagles.
Just under 20 minutes later, Nickels notched her sixth goal of 2009 off assists from
Lauryn Semling (Plover, WI) and Bieschke, giving the Pointers the two goal advantage.
In the second half, with just over 30 minutes remaining in the game, Spees tacked on another UWSP goal off a penalty kick. Just 15 minutes later, Semling found Nickles for her second goal of the game and seventh of the season, putting the Pointers in front 4-0.
Liz Hunter (Stevens Point) recorded her ninth win of the season, eighth by shutout, stopping three Eagle shots on the evening. La Crosse goalkeeper Sagan Pizzingrilli faced 27 pointer shots on the evening, 11 of them on goal, and recorded seven saves.
