The Pointers, fresh off a 48 point output against UW-Eau Claire last weekend, struggled to get anything going offensively. A tough Blue Devil defense and unfavorable weather conditions limited the Pointers through the air much of the game.
The Pointers trailed at halftime 6-0 as UW-Stout kicker Kyle Martin connected on field goals of 25 yards and 44 yards. The Pointers had the ball for 7:57 in the first half and ran only 17 plays, compared to UW-Stout's 40.
Jared Beckwith (Baraboo) hooked up with his favorite target,
Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee), with 9:25 left in the third quarter for a 24 yard score. The touchdown was Beckwith's 11th through the air and Jenkins' ninth. The touchdown also put Jenkins at fifth all-time on the career touchdown receptions list with 21.
The Pointers had a chance to strike with 4:08 left in the third quarter when Beckwith seemed to have hooked up with
Anthony Aker (Milwaukee) in the endzone, but the ball was jarred loose as Aker hit the ground and Kendall Wade intercepted it for the touchback.
The Pointers had a golden opportunity to score slip from their hands early in the fourth quarter. Beckwith hooked up with Aker for a 63 yard gain to the five yard line, but the play was nullified by an ineligible man downfield penalty. The Pointers punted the ball a few plays later.
Pointer running back
Garrett Medenwald (Green Bay) led all Pointers in rushing yards with 68 yards on 16 carries, 13 carries which came in the second half. Beckwith finished the day 13-22 for 111 yards and one touchdown, while Jenkins led all receivers with 54 yards on five receptions and one touchdown.
The Pointer defense held the Blue Devils to 225 yards despite being on the field over 37 minutes.
Joe Mleziva (Casco) finished with 10 tackles and one sack and
John Jones (Oregon) added nine tackles with one sack.
UW-Stout was led on offense by running back Craig Warminski, who finished the day with 138 yards on 28 carries. He also added 29 receiving yards on four receptions. Quarterback Ross Carey went 13-24 for 106 yards. Trevor Fiege added 10 tackles on defense and Marcus Ball sacked Beckwith 2.5 times.
The Pointers have won their last two homecoming games, beating UW-Platteville 3-0 last year and UW-Stout this year.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action next week Saturday, October 17, when they travel to Oshkosh to take on the Titans. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
