Backed by Gaskell-Larson Brace, Havlik Shuts Out Carroll

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – It took just 82 seconds for the UW-Stevens Point men's soccer team (1-0-0) to take its first lead of the season in an eventual 2-0 win over visiting Carroll (0-1-0) on Tuesday night.
 
Mac Gaskell-Larson (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) opened the scoring just 1:22 into the match burying a rebound off the crossbar for the 1-0 lead. It was Gaskell-Larson's first career goal. Xavier Klun (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) picked up an assist for his first collegiate point.
 
UWSP goalkeeper Jacob Havlik (Onalaska, WIs./Onalaska) made two saves to keep UWSP in front, 1-0, at the half.
 
Riley Nycz (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) nearly doubled the UWSP lead in the 73rd minute, ringing a shot off the post. Gaskell-Larson pushed the UWSP advantage to 2-0 with his second of the match in the 75th minute.
 
In the 84th minute, UWSP earned a penalty kick, but Carroll goalkeeper Angel Escamilla made the save.
 
Just 47 seconds later, Carroll was awarded a penalty kick. Havlik also made the stop to keep the clean sheet.
 
Havlik made three saves to earn the shutout win. CU keeper Escamilla had six saves.
 
The Pointers remain at home to take on Dubuque on Friday (Sept. 4) at 7:00 p.m.
