Alvarado Venegas, Wehrman Win Conference Titles for the Pointers

LA CROSSE, Wis.—The UW-Stevens Point men's and women's track and field teams opened day one of the WIAC Championships (pres. by Culver's) on Friday evening. Freshman Faith Wehrman (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and sophomore Mateo Alvarado Venegas (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) each claimed the conference title in the 10,000-meter run.
 
Day One Results
 
Wehrman claimed her 10,000-meter run title with a time of 35:24.97, setting a new meet record. Makaela Malin (Monticello, Minn./St. Michael, Albertville) reached the podium with a sixth-place finish in the steeplechase, finishing with a time of 11:16.30. Brenna Steinagel (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) earned a sixth-place podium finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 35.46 meters. Melanie Princl (West Bend, Wis./West) qualified for the 100-meter hurdles finals, with a first-round time of 14.43 to take second place.
 
Alvarado Venegas claimed his 10,000-meter run title with a time of 29:52.09. Gavin Fujino (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake) earned a second-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 4.95 meters to reach the podium for the Pointers. Jack Marsh (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) reached the podium in the hammer throw, placing eighth with a mark of 53.17 meters. Ben Kempe (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) qualified for both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles finals with times of 14.96 and 54.91, respectively.
 
Princl, Kempe and the remaining Pointers will compete on day two of the WIAC Championships, tomorrow (May 2) at 1:15 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.
