STEVENS POINT, Wis.—UW-Stevens Point men's and women's track and field head coach Brett Witt named Taylor Smith as the program's next assistant coach and Ed Stowell as the next Larry Aschbrooke graduate assistant coach.

"I couldn't be more excited to bring Taylor and Ed on board and have Kevin take on exclusively coaching our horizontal jumps," said Witt. "Taylor's passion for and success coaching the short sprints at Saint Mary's really separated him from others. In addition, his background in strength and conditioning was something that the committee felt could benefit our entire track and field team."

Smith hails from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota where he served as the men's and women's assistant coach from January 2022 to October 2025 until he was named the associate men's and women's track and field head coach. During his five seasons at SMU, he led 95 performances to the school's all-time top-10 list, 14 school records, 73 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics Conference honors and six individual MIAC titles.

Prior to SMU, Smith served as a graduate assistant for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team for one season. He created and implemented practice plans, assisted in strength & conditioning sessions, practice day set-up and fulfilled meet day responsibilities for the Eagles.

Smith has USTFCCCA certifications in jumping, sprint, hurdle and relay events.

Smith graduated from Central College in 2019 with a bachelor of arts in exercise science. He received his master of science in human performance from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in 2021.

Stowell joins the staff after three seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student track and field assistant coach. While at UWEC, he assisted the coaching staff with day-to-day needs and coordinated meet setups as well as working with full-time assistant coaches in operating team social media pages. Stowell is a USATF member and has received his USATF level one coaching certification.

"What stood out to us about Ed was his familiarity with the WIAC, that he had already performed a number of the duties and responsibilities that we will need him to complete here and that while his background is in distance, he had a desire to help with and learn more about other events," continued Witt.

Stowell graduated from UW-Eau Claire this spring with a bachelor of arts in history.

Kevin Streveler, who coached with the Pointers last season, will assume all horizontal jumps coaching duties this season.

"Kevin was an exceptional jumps coach at the high school level for decades," stated Witt.  "He co-coached the horizontal jumps for us last season, and our jumpers did some great things. I look forward to seeing what he can do moving forward as the sole coach of the horizontal jumps. The Pointer track and field coaching staff is more complete and can better serve our athletes after these hires and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together."
