Men’s Basketball Draws UMHB in NCAA First Round

3/2/2026 4:11:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team will face the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, the NCAA announced on its Division III men's basketball selection show on Monday (Mar. 2). Tip-off against UMHB is scheduled for 4:50 p.m.

The Pointers will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minn., the host institution for the first and second round matchups. Host GAC will play Bethany Lutheran in the other first-round game at the site.

UWSP earned an at-large bid after finishing 20th in the final NPI ratings. The Pointers are one of four WIAC teams to earn an NCAA Tournament bid. UWSP has played five other NCAA Tournament participants this season and have a win over all five.

Junior Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) leads the Pointers in scoring at 18.6 points per game, second-best scoring average in the WIAC. Butler is also second in the WIAC with a .901 free-throw percentage. On Jan. 10, Butler became the 34th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. He has 1,226 entering the NCAA Tournament which ranks 20th in school history.

The Pointers have only faced UMHB one time in program history. UWSP got a 76-51 win at UMHB on Dec. 29, 1998. The Pointers are 1-1 all-time against Gustavus Adolphus and 2-0, including a win in November this season, against Bethany Lutheran.

UWSP has won the National Championship four times (2004, 2005, 2010, 2015) and will be making the 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Pointers return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.
