PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (5-6) split matches at the Lakeland Quad on Saturday. UWSP fell in three sets to No. 7 UC Santa Cruz (10-1) before winning by sweep over Wittenberg (8-4).
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) was the only UWSP player with double-figures kills in each match. He had 10 against UCSC and 18 versus WU.
Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) was in double digits with 11 and 12 digs, respectively, on the day.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and
Ben Feld (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had double-figure assists in both matches.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, UCSC 3 (23-25, 21-25, 21-25)
Dresen and
Nate Arndorfer (Lino Lakes, Minn./Totino Grace) had two kills each as the team tied at 8-8 in the first.
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) had three kills and
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) had two late, but UCSC prevailed with the win.
Arndorfer had a kill and a block as UWSP pulled within 12-8 in the second. Dresen had three kills and Jetzer added two as UWSP dropped the set.
Bertrandt had four kills in the third set. Dresen had an ace, but UWSP played from behind the whole set.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Wittenberg 0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19)
Dresen had five kills as UWSP rallied past Wittenberg, 13-10, in the first.
Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) had an ace, a block and a kill as the Pointers took the opening set.
Dresen had an ace and a kill with Niznik adding two kills in a 6-1 burst as UWSP took an 8-3 lead in the second.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) had a kill and an ace. Dresen seven kills in the set, including the clincher.
Dresen, Jetzer and Niznik combined for four kills as UWSP used an 11-2 run to seize control of the third set. Dresen sealed the match with a pair of late kills.
The Pointers are back in action on Sunday (Feb. 15) at MSOE. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
