Men’s Volleyball Takes NCC to Five Sets, Fall Twice at NCC Tri

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (3-5) dropped both matches at the North Central Tri on Saturday. UWSP fell in five sets to host North Central (4-1) before suffering a sweep at the hand of No. 9 Cal Lutheran (9-1).
 
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) had double-digit kills in both matches. He led all players with 14 kills versus CLU and added 11 in the open against NCC. Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) had a match-best 17 kills versus NCC with Alec Peterson (Madison, Wis./Memorial) and Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) adding double figures with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
 
Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) had 13 digs in each match, leading the Pointers in both. Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) had 12 digs versus NCC. Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Ben Feld (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) posted double-digit assists in both matches. Jolin led UWSP with 36 and 17. Feld added 15 and 13.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 2, NCC 3 (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 9-15)
Niznik, Bertrandt and Dresen had two kills each early in the first as UWSP trailed, 8-7. Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) had a kill and a block late as UWSP dropped the opening set.
 
Dresen and Jetzer had two kills and a block each as UWSP again trailed, 8-7, in the second. Bertrandt and Nate Arndorfer (Lino Lakes, Minn./Totino Grace) had two kills apiece in the middle of the set. Jetzer had three kills down the stretch as the Pointers came up just short to fall into a 2-0 hole.
 
Dresen started the third set with three kills and two blocks for an 8-4 advantage. Bertrandt added a trio of kills as UWSP held a 22-20 lead. Dresen, Arndorfer and Jetzer had kills late as the Pointers took the third set.
 
Jetzer and Niznik each had an ace as UWSP jumped in front in the fourth, 13-10. Dresen and Peterson had four kills each and Feld served an ace to send the match to a fifth set.
 
Peterson had three kills in the fifth set, but UWSP couldn't get the underhand and fell in five.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 0, CLU 3 (17-25, 20-25, 15-25)
Jetzer and Dresen combined for nine kills in the opening set as UWSP trailed the whole set.
 
The duo combined for 10 kills in the second set. Jolin served an ace and Owen Andersen (Racine, Wis./Case) had a kill, but the Pointers came up short in the second.
 
Jetzer had the lone kill as UWSP fell into a 9-1 hole to start the third. Peterson served an ace and Dresen had two kills as UWSP suffered a sweep.
 
The Pointers are back home on Tuesday (Feb. 3) to take on Augustana at 7:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
