Pointers Split Matches at UWSP Invitational

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (3-2) split matches at the UWSP Invitational on Sunday. The Pointers were swept by Loras (4-0) before defeating Illinois Tech (0-4) in four sets to end the day.
 
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) recorded a double-double against Loras with team-highs of 13 kills and 11 digs. He was in double-figures kills versus IIT with 15, one shy of Ethan Jetzer's (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) 16 kills. Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Ben Feld (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had double-digits assists in both matches with 80 combined on the day by the duo.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 0, Loras 3 (18-25, 11-25, 30-32)
Dresen had a pair of kills as UWSP stayed close at 12-9. Dresen had three more kills in the set as UWSP dropped the opening set.
 
Dresen had a kill and a block early in the second set. Dresen and Alec Peterson (Madison, Wis./Memorial) combined for four kills late as the Duhawks ran away for a 2-0 lead.
 
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) had a pair of kills as the Pointers got within 12-10 in the third set. Jolin served an ace in a 4-0 run for a 17-17 tie. Bertrandt and Dresen had consecutive kills as UWSP took a 22-19 lead. Jetzer had a pair of kills and a block late as UWSP battled to the longest set in program history, 32-30.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 3 IIT 1 (25-23, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18)
Dresen had three kills and Peterson had an ace as the teams tied at 14-14 in the first set. Jetzer and Dylan Niznik (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) each had a kill in a pivotal 5-0 run late as UWSP took the opening set.
 
Dresen had three kills and an ace as UWSP opened the second set in front, 11-7. Dresen, Niznik, Jetzer and Bertrandt combined for nine kills as the Pointers took a 2-0 lead.
 
Fourteen of UWSP's 15 points in the third set came from kills. Peterson, Dresen, Niznik and Jetzer combined for 12 kills in the set.
 
Peterson and Jetzer combined for five kills as UWSP held an 8-7 advantage. Jetzer had three kills and a block in a 6-1 burst. Dresen had two kills late as UWSP took the match in four sets.
 
The Pointers will remain at home for a 6:00 p.m. match against MSOE on Wednesday (Jan. 28).
