MADISON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (2-1) split matches at the Edgewood Tri on Saturday. The Pointers took down host Edgewood (0-1) in four sets before falling to Illinois Wesleyan (2-0) in five sets.
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) picked up the first double-double of the season with a team-high 10 kills and he added 14 digs versus IWU.
Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Pointers with 15 kills against Edgewood.
Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) led all players in digs in both matches with 22 and 19 on the day.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and
Ben Feld (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) were both in double-figure assists in both matches combining for 80 total on the day between the duo.
Game 1: UWSP 3, Edgewood 1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-23, 26-24)
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) and Olson had consecutive kills to cap a 5-0 run for a 10-6 lead in the first. Dresen served an ace to maintain the lead, 18-14. Dresen and Olson had back-to-back kills as UWSP finished with a 3-0 run to end the first.
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) had a pair of early kills in the second.
Nate Arndorfer (Lino Lakes, Minn./Totino Grace) served an ace during a 6-1 run as UWSP got a 14-12 lead. Jetzer and
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) combined for five kills, but the Eagles prevailed with the 27-25 win.
Olson served an early ace in the third.
Alec Peterson (Madison, Wis./Memorial) served an ace midway through and had a block and a kill to set up set point. Olson finished the set win with a kill.
Bertrandt had two kills as UWSP jumped ahead, 5-2, in the fourth. Olson had three kills and an ace for a 12-8 lead. Bertrandt and Dresen had two kills each as UWSP used a 6-2 run to seal the win.
Game 2: UWSP 2, IWU 3 (26-24, 26-28, 25-21, 16-25, 10-15)
Peterson had a pair of kills early in the first. Jolin served an ace to tie the set at 11-11. Bertrandt had a kill to give UWSP set point at 24-23. Dresen had a kill for another set point and Olson and Smith combined for the set-clinching block.
Arndorfer and Dresen had two kills apiece as the Pointers took a 9-3 lead in the second. Olson and Arndorfer had a block and a kill each as the lead reached 16-8. Arndorfer had two kills and two blocks late, but IWU roared back for a 28-26 win.
Dresen had two kills in an 8-1 run as the Pointers gained an 19-14 advantage in the third. Olson and Arndorfer combined on a block and Bertrandt won the set with a kill.
Arndorfer had a pair of kills as UWSP trailed in the fourth, 10-9. Jetzer had two kills late before IWU forced a decisive fifth set.
IWU began the fifth with an 11-3 run. Smith had a pair of blocks, but the Pointers could only get within four late.
The Pointers are back in action on Jan. 25 hosting the UWSP Invitational beginning at 11:00 a.m. against Loras.
