STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (18-8) nearly pulled off a reverse sweep of Roosevelt (4-15) on Senior Night. UWSP came up short, 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 12-15).
Senior
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) led the Pointers with 21 assists in his home finale.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) added 20 assists.
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) led UWSP with 17 kills.
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) was also in double figures with 12 kills. Bertrandt led all players with seven blocks on the night.
Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) had a match-high 20 digs.
Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) each had a kill as UWSP opened up with a 3-0 lead. The Lakers used a 10-3 for a 19-14 lead before Dresen recorded his first kill of the match. UWSP's only three points the remainder of the set were RU service errors.
Dresen had an ace and four kills as UWSP stayed close early in the second. Bertrandt had blocks on each end of a 4-0 run. Roosevelt responded with a 5-0 burst. Bertrandt added two more kills, but the Pointers faced a 2-0 hole.
Olson and Dresen had three kills each as UWSP opened with a 15-9 lead in the third set.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) added a kill and a block for a 19-10 advantage. Smith served an ace late and
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) had a pair of kills as the Pointers took the third set.
Jetzer and Dresen combined for three-straight kills as UWSP went in front, 8-7, in the fourth. Bertrandt had two blocks and four late kills as the Pointers held on to force a fifth set.
Dresen, Bertrandt and Olson had a pair of kills each and UWSP trailed in the fifth, 9-8. Smith had an ace late, but the Lakers held on to take the decisive fifth set.
The Pointers travel to Rockford on Friday (March 28) for the regular season finale. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
