STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (9-5) split matches at its own UWSP Classic on Saturday. The Pointers swept Marian before suffering a sweep to UC-Santa Cruz.
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) had a match-high 14 kills against MU and totalled 22 on the day.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) combined for 41 assists against the Sabres and 26 versus the Banana Slugs.
Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) had a team-best seven digs in each match.
UWSP 3, Marian 0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-14)
Dresen had a kill and an ace early as the Pointers opened up a 4-1 lead.
Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) had two kills each as the lead grew to 15-7.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) had three kills late as the Pointers took the opening set.
Dresen opened the second set with consecutive kills. Late in the set, Dresen and
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) combined for six kills as UWSP ended the second set with an 8-3 run.
Olson had three kills early in the third set. Jetzer had four kills and a block late and Dresen ended the match with a kill.
UWSP 0, UCSC 3 (15-25, 23-25, 16-25)
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) had a kill and an ace as the Pointers trialed 10-5 early in the first set. He added two more kills, but UCSC pulled away to take the first set.
Bertrandt and Olson had three kills as the Banana Slugs took a 10-3 lead. The Pointers clawed back behind five kills by Dresen and Bertrandt to tie the set at 19-19. Dresen tied the set again at 23-23 with a kill, but UCSC took the final two points.
Olson and Dresen had two kills each, but the Banana Slugs pulled away to complete the sweep.
UWSP heads to Illinois for the Concordia Tournament on Friday (Feb. 14). The Pointers are scheduled to face Roosevelt at 5:00 p.m. and host Concordia University Chicago at 7:00 p.m.
