RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point men's volleyball team (11-5) won both its matches at Friday's Maroon and Gold Tri in Illinois. UWSP prevailed in a five-set thriller over host Concordia University Chicago (3-7) before taking down Roosevelt (0-6) in four sets.
Spencer Baeckman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) recorded a program record nine total blocks in the win over Roosevelt.
Hudson Dresen (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 kills and a season-high 14 digs in the win over CUC. He totalled 30 kills on the day after getting 12 more against RU.
Cael Bertrandt (Big Bend, Wis./Mukwonago) had a season-high 17 kills against CUC.
Ethan Jetzer (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) had a team-best 13 kills versus the Lakers.
Sam Jolin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and
Josh Brogren (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) each had double-figure assists in both matches on the day. Brogren had 21 assists in each match. Jolin had 35 versus CUC and 18 more against RU.
Liam Robertson (Waukesha, Wis./North) had a match-high 18 digs against the Lakers and was in double digits with 11 against the Cougars.
UWSP 3, CUC 2 (25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 16-14)
Jetzer had a kill and two aces in a 4-0 burst as UWSP went ahead 11-9 in the first set. Bertrandt had a pair of blocks and secured the opening set win with a kill.
Kyle Smith (Waukesha, Wis./West) had two kills and a block, but the Pointers trailed 16-10. Jetzer had a pair of kills down the stretch as CUC evened the match at 1-1.
Dresen had three kills as the teams played to a 12-12 tie in the third. Jetzer added two more kills, but the Cougars took a 2-1 lead.
Nate Olson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and Bertrandt had three kills apiece as the Pointers jumped in front, 8-4. Dresen had two kills and a block in a 6-0 run as the Pointers forced a decisive fifth set.
Dresen had four kills as the teams tied at 11-11 in the fifth. Bertrandt and Olson each had a kill to break at 14-14 tie as the Pointers prevailed with the five-set win.
UWSP 3, Roosevelt 1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18)
Smith had a block and an ace early and Olson had back-to-back kills for a 7-3 lead. Baeckman had two blocks late as UWSP took a 23-22 edge. Olson gave UWSP set point with a kill, but the Lakers took the opening set with three-straight points.
Baeckman had two blocks early in the second. Bertrandt added a block and two kills as UWSP took a 17-13 lead. Dresen had consecutive kills as UWSP closed the set with a 6-0 run.
Smith served consecutive aces and Baeckman had three kills as UWSP led, 13-7. Jetzer had three kills and Baeckman another block as the Pointers took a 2-1 lead.
Baeckman and Jetzer had back-to-back combined blocks in a 4-0 run as UWSP took a 7-6 advantage. Baeckman had another block as the Pointers had two more 4-0 burst to extend the lead to 15-9. Dresen and Jetzer combined for six kills as UWSP took the match in four sets.
The Pointers travel to Milwaukee on Sunday (Feb. 16) to face California Lutheran at 1:00 p.m. and MSOE at 4:00 p.m.
